Below can be found details of the 14 Leeds Boys remembered on the Commonwealth Graves Website who are recorded as giving their lives on the 06th June 1944 D Day the first day of Operation Overlord.
Between the 07th June 1944 and the 30th August 1944 officially the last day of Operation Overlord 157 other boys from Leeds are remembered on the CWGC website.
Please note the above numbers are for those Laid to Rest in France or Remembered on Memorials in France. It is safe to assume that many more from our City were lost at Sea and are remembered on Naval Memorials at Chatham and Portsmouth. Others will have been brought home to hospitals across the UK and passed away due to wounds received in Battle.

1921: 20th May -19th June Born Leeds Vol 9b Page 921 Son of John William and Kate Philips Married
1921: 19th June Residence No 92 Meanwood Road Leeds. Described as being aged under 1 month.
1924: 16th July Roy was one of Prize Winning babys in the Leeds Childrens Day Competition held at Roundhay Park

1918: 07th November Born Willington Durham Son of Addison and Harriet Ellen Davies Married Durham 1905.
1938: Husband of Jessie Shirren Married Durham West.
1939: Residence No 2 Belle Vue Willington Occupation Conductor on Local Bus Company.
1946: Wife Jessie remarried to Ronald Currie in Leeds hence connection to Leeds and CWGC stating Jessie of Leeds.

COULSON Reginald (Served under his mothers Maiden Name)
Marine PLY/X120489 No 48 Royal Marines Commando CLICK HERE KIA 06/06/1944 Aged 27.
1917: 03rd August Born Reginald Myres Vol 9b Page 655 Son of Robert Myres and Doris Coulson Married Holbeck 1914 Vol 9b Page 1030
1939: Residence No 22 Goodwin Road Upper Wortley Occupation Breweres Labourer.
1944: 06th June Landed on Juno Beach which was part of St Aubin-Sur-Mer Calvados on the Normandy Coast alongside the Canadians at around 08.25. It has to be assumed he was killed whilst on the beach. CLICK HERE (Acknowledgment to Normandy Then and Now.)
1944: 19th June Reginalds Death was reported in the Yorkshire Evening Post.
1944: 29th November Reginald was moved form where he was origanlily Laid to Rest at St Aubin Sur Mer to Bayeux War Cemetery.

FURNESS Arthur
Able Seaman C/JX374582 SS Empire Anvil (Click Here) Royal Navy KIA 06/06/1944 Aged 20.
1924: Born Leeds Vol 9b Page 601 Son of Henry and Margaret Sammons Married 1920.
1939: Residence No 6 Beech Walk Gipton.
1944: Arthur was killed whilst transporting American Troops onto Omaha Beach in a landing craft. Arthur was based and trained at HMS Copra which specialised in combined actions using landing crafts.
1944: Arthur was Laid to Rest at the USA Cemetery St Laurant Colleville-sur-Mer. Established on the 08th June as the first American Cemetery. Today it is known as the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial and holds the remains of 9,388 American Troops the majority gave their lives in the first few days at Omaha and Utah beaches.
1944: 23rd November Arthur and other British troops were moved from the USA Cemetery and re buried at Bayeux War Cemetery.

HARRISON George
Private 4547166 2nd Bn East Yorkshire Regiment DOW06/06/1944 Aged 20.
1923: 17th August Born Leeds Vol 9b Page 489 Son of Ellen Harrison.
1939: Residence No 16 Verdun Street Burley Leeds Occupation Labourer.
1944: 06th June George was onboard either Empire Battleaxe or HMS Glenearn and was lowered onto a Landing craft between 04.30 and 06.00. At 07.25 he would have landed on Queen Red Beach Sword Beach.
The 2nd Bn East Yorkshire Regiment fought there way off the beach and that night slept in a Cornfield near Hermanville. Losing 60 men with 137 being wounded we must assume George was one of those wounded and passed away the same day.

ILLINGWORTH Jack
Able Seaman C/JX 354617 H.M.L.C.T.(A) 2039 Royal Navy Drowned 06/06/1944 Aged 20.
1924: 16th January Born Bramley Vol 9b Page 641 Son of Harold and Amy Turner Married 1915 St Peters Leeds.
1939: Residence No 11 Newley Lane Bramley Occupation Apprentice Printer.
1944: 06th June Jack was onboard Landing Craft Tank 2039 carrying Sherman Tanks heading for King Sector Gold Beach when in heavy seas 20 miles from the coast the craft capsized. Jack gave his life alongside Ordinance Telegraphist James Donnelly of Liverpool Aged 19 of HMS Kingsmill the flagship on the assault of Gold Beach
1944: 06th-07th June The Royal Navy sank HMLCT 2039 as it was a hazard to other ships during the D Day landings.

Lance Corporal 4543007 2nd Bn East Yorkshire Regiment KIA 06/06/1944 Aged 21.
1923: 23rd August Born Leeds Vol 9b Page 457 Son of Joseph and May Buckley Married Leeds 1923.
1939: Residence No 75 Stoney Rock Road Burmantofts Occupation Tailors Trimmer
1943: Married Audrey Horsman Married St Martins Potternewton Leeds.
1944: 06th June Harry was on the same ships as George Harrison remembered above. Harry was more than likely killed as he stepped of the landing craft or on Sword beach his body was not recovered, as a result he is remembered on the Bayeux Memorial to the missing.
1944: 16th July Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer reported that Harry was wounded and his residence was Lorraine Street Meanwood.

Private 14425598 5th Bn East Yorkshire Regiment KIA 06/06/1944 Aged 18.
1926: Born Leeds Vol 9b Page 623 Son of Harry and Eliza Ann Eddison
1939: Residence No 21 Fieldhead Terrace Woodhouse.
1944: 06th June alongside Leeds Boy Roy Appleton, Freeman landed on Gold Beach. Laid to Rest Ver-Sur Mer.
1944: December Freeman was moved to Bayeux War Cemetery where he lies at rest today.
1947: 06th June Freemans family remembered him in a family Notice Yorkshire Evening Post

RAINFORD Richard Henry
Trooper 14546131 61st Regiment Reconnaissance Corps Royal Armoured Corps KIA 06/06/1944 Aged 19.
1925: Born Leeds Vol 9b Page 752 Son of Wilfred and Alice Driffill Married 1924 Holbeck Registry Office.
1944: 06th June Richard Landed at Gold Beach the aim of the 61st was to land and contact give support to the invading battalions. However the sea was rough and under heavy shelling and gun fire only half the crews landed safely many drowning. It can be assumed Richard either drowned or was killed on the beach. His body was recovered and he was Laid to Rest at Villers Le-Sec.
1944: 21st October Richard was reburied at Bayeux War Cemetery.
1947: 06th June Friends and Family remmebered Richard in the Yorkshire Evening Post

1939: Residence No 20 Ivy Street East End Park Leeds. Occupation Wholesale News Assistant.
1944: Was attached to Operational Refresher Training Unit based at RAF Hampstead Norris Berkshire.
1944: 05th June Serving as a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner onboard Aircraft Albemarle ST.II Serial Number V1745 CLICK HERE
which left RAF Tarrant Rushton Dorset Towing a Glider as part of Operation Tonga the capture of Pegasus Bridge in Normandy. CLICK HERE
1944: 06th June V1745 Crashed near St Sylvain 3 miles southwest of St Valery-en-Caux with the loss of all 7 crew.
1944: Laid to Rest alongside 6 his crew members CLICK HERE
1945: 05th February Clifford and the rest of the crew were re buried all together in the same churchyard.
1946: 06th June Clifford was remembered by friends and family in the Yorkshire Evening Post
1949/1950: 06th June Clifford was remembered in the Yorkshire Evening Post by his parents and brother Robert.

1939: Residence No 4 Watson Road Sutton Estate Cross Gates (Now Killingbeck) Leeds Occupation Boiler Man.
1944: 06th June Edward left Portsmouth on board HMS Glen Erne and landed on Sword Beach at around 07.30. Edwrds role as a Sapper was to clear any mines on the beach and as the troops headed inland.
1946: 06th June Edwards Mum and brothers remembered him in the Yorkshire Evening Post
