A court of enquiry into Williams death and injuries to Lance Corporal E Linzie 40039 took place 22/06/1917. At 04.00 a witness heard a shot in the trench and saw William fall, he was on sentry duty and it was explained on night duty one round would be in the chamber it was found that both men were on duty cleaning rifles verdict to look at cleaning rifle whilst in trench. Gilbert was only in Belgium for 17 days he lost his life at the First Battle for Ypres. On the 27th October 1914 only12 officers and 460 men from the 2nd Bn Scots Guards answered the roll call. Exactly a year to the day Gilbert died this appeared in the Leeds Mercury.
