Served with the Portsmouth Battalion at Dunkirk and in the Defence of Antwerp between 19/09/1914 and 13/10/1914. All Portsmouth Battalion casualties recorded by the CWGC as died on the 06/05/1915 were most likely killed in the charge up Razor-Back hill, Monash Valley Gallipoli on the 03/05/1916, but may have been killed at Anzac Beachhead on any date between 28/04/1915 and 03/05/1915. Son of Henry and Mary Enlisted Manchester 10/11/1914 Occupation railway Signalman at Hemsworth. Brother of Lieutenant Herbert Hartley KIA 24/03/1918. Naval Record Killed by a stray shell in Rest Camp at Cape Helles.

Private Horace Bruckshaw KIA 28/04/1917 Remembered Arras Memorial wrote 13/05/1915 Enjoyed a good long night's sleep for we were very tired. Our artillery has been bombarding since yesterday afternoon. We dug a hole in the ground first thing & put a waterproof sheet in it, which we filled with water. Stripping ourselves we then enjoyed a much needed bath. Soon after we had completed our rough & ready toilet a big shell dropped right in amongst us knocking out seven or eight. Pollard & Madden were two victims out of our section. Duckworth, the man who did such good work in the landing was blown to atoms. Remembered on Helles Memorial Turkey.

Brother of Private Harry KIA 08/11/1917 Aged 27 and Rifleman Frederick KIA 13/05/1915 Aged 19.  Private Horace Bruckshaw KIA 28/04/1917 Remembered Arras Memorial Wrote "In the evening we got shelled and I had a very narrow escape. I was standing in the open when a large shrapnel shell burst just in front. Bullets simply rained all round me, one even striking my boot. I fell into some bushes, which were against me, instinct telling me to take any cover that offered. It would have been too late to stop any damage being done however. There was one chap killed and about three wounded by that shell, who like myself were caught in the open. Laid to Rest Redoubt Cemetery Helles Turkey.

SIMPSON John Edward Private PO/18289 2nd Royal Marine Bn Attached 188th Brigade Light Trench Mortar Battery 03/08/1916 Aged 19. Born Leeds 23/08/1896. Son of John W and Louisa Naval Record 10 Upper Woollsworth Street Leeds. 1st RM Bn War Diary 03/08/1916 Front Line Trenches Angres II Sector. An explosion occurred in a Dugout in which was stowed about 100 rounds of Stokes Gun Ammo. The Dugout was completely wrecked & 1 Corporal & 4 Privates of the 188th Trench Mortar Battery were killed. No knowledge as to how explosion occurred. Laid to Rest Tranchée de Mecknes Cemetery Aix-Noulette France.
