The memorial remembers 62 men from Leeds who gave their lives in World War One. The Memorial was moved after St James church was demolished in ?? The Memorial is very difficult to read as the weather has taken its toll however as many men as possible have been identified.

A LEEDS CHURCH WAR MEMORIAL. ANOTHER CITY CROSS.

Memorial in the form of cross of Aberdeen granite, erected outside St. James's Church, New York Street, Leeds, to commemorate the sacrifice of 68 men of the parish who fell tho war, was unveiled yesterday afternoon by Lieut.-Col. J. Duffield, father of the Vicar (the Rev. John Duffield). impressive service, attended crowded congregation, was held the Church, and the Vicar of Leeds (tjie Rev. Bernard Heywood) gave address. was our duty, he said, deliberately to set ourselves remember that we wore living in some measure comfort and liberty indeed, perhaps, if many of us were living at all it was because men like those whose names were on the Cross stood between us and the enemy in the dark days of war. This generation must never forget that their lives were bought at a price. He was glad there were many such memorials to which people could give a mental salute as they passed by. He never thought of the buried in our churchyards or cemeteries as if they were in a churchyard or cemetery. They were not they were living somewhere else. remembering those who had passed on, let us give thought also to the living. No one could be happy so long as any of those who stood between us and the enemy were wanting the price of a meal. The hymn " For all the Saints " was being sung, clergy, choir, and congregation filed out of the church and took up positions surrounding the memorial. Here Lieut.-Cot. Duffield, describing himself as a comparatively humble soldier of an Irish regiment," gave which said that many of the men who died went forth not a professional soldier, like himself, but simply perform a wholly act. After the gallant officer had withdrawn the Union Jack which covered the memorial. "The Last Post" was sounded by a couple of buglers, and the National Anthem was sung. Subsequently many relatives of the deceased men laid wreaths at the foot of the memorial. The vicar of the parish (the Rev. J. Duffield. C.F.) and curate (the Rev. H. L. Son of Arthur and Margaret Alice Carr. 1911/CWGC 20 Roundhay Grove Harehills Lane. Attended Leeds Grammar School. Originally laid to rest at Waterloo Farm Cemetery Passchendaele North East of Gravenstafel . In 1920 identified by his officers book and two stars on his uniform finally Laid to Rest Tyne Cot Cemetery Belgium.

Most of Brothers sisters still living Middleton on the Wolds however Brother Fred was residing Chapletown Road Leeds sister Grace had married William Isaac and was residing at Stoney Rock Road Leeds. Albert's Nephew Frank son of Brother George Tom was KIA 28/07/1915. All medals (1921) personal effects were sent to Alberts sister Leila. Remembered Basra Memorial Iraq.
