1911: Resident No 10 Station Road Armley Occupation Tenterer in a Woolen Factory. (Someone who, after cloth was dyed, stretched it on a frame, called a "Tent" for drying . This frame was fitted with hooks known as Tenterhooks)

1935: Sarah died of shock after being found burned burned after her nightdress caught fire. Resident No 10 Station Road Armley. YEP 18th October.

Ordinary Seaman J/19260 KIA H.M.S Formidable 01/01/1915 Aged 18.

​

1896: Born Battersea London 01st May Son of George Edward and Lydia Agnes Kettle Married Battersea London Vol 1d Page 589.

1911: Residence No 23 Far Fold Armley Occupation Apprentice Engineer.

1914: Enlisted 01st May into Royal Navy posted to HMS Formidable 13th June.

1915: KIA on board HMS Formidable the first battleship to be sunk in WW1. Commanded by Captain Loxley was sunk by two torpedoes from German submarine U 24, about 20 miles off Start Point Portland at 2 am whilst on exercises.

 

The first torpedo hit the number one boiler port side, the second about 45 minutes later caused the ship to list heavily to starboard, sinking it in less than two hours. 547 men including Sidney lost their lives with 233 surviving.

​

Stanningley Survivor Seaman William Henry Fletcher stated the following during an article about his escape from the Formidable.
