Son of Edwin Arthur a Bricklayer and Caroline Moxon Married 1882 St Mathias Burley CWGC 12 Oakwood Lane Roundhay. After the outbreak of war Edwin joined the Leeds University Officer Training Corps, was transferred to the London Scottish 1/14th County of London Regiment. Enlisted Leeds 04/12/1915 Occupation Stockbrokers Clerk Residence Inglewood Oakwood Lane Roundhay. Landed France 06/06/1916.

CHIPPENDALE Frank Dean 2nd Lieutenant 4th Bn Duke of Wellingtons West Riding Regiment 10/04/1918 Aged 28 Leeds Modern:Unknown. Born Guiseley. Son of Harold an Architect and Louisa Dean Married 1885 Cleckheaton. Husband of Elizabeth Helen Rhodes Married 07/12/1915 at St Oswald Guiseley. Left Leeds Modern and attended the Leeds School of Art and worked in his fathers business as an Architect and Surveyor in Leeds moving for a short time to London. Resident 1911 in Islington went to Manaos Brazil between 1911 and 1913. Frank Enlisted at Leeds in February 1916 as a Private in the Duke of Wellingtons West Riding Regiment soon being promoted to the rank of officer. After training Frank was sent to France where it was reported he gave his life in action at Erkingen in April 1916. Erkingen is actually south of Stuttgart Germany could it be he was a prisoner of war ?

COOK Arthur Serjeant S4/253748 Army Service Corps attached 2nd/2nd Bn London Regiment KIA 24/04/1918 Aged 24 Leeds Modern:Unknown. Born 1893 Leeds. Baptised 24/09/1893 St Clement Sheepscar Leeds. Son of Arthur a furniture dealer and Clara Heaton Married 1888 St Peter Leeds 1911 3 Hartley Hill North Street. Left Leeds Boys Modern and worked in his fathers furniture shop which was in the Brunswick district of Leeds at Grove Terrace. Enlisted 27/06/1912 Leeds into the Royal Army Service Corps was transferred to the London Regiment 04/08/1914 Landed France 09/01/1917 and was reported missing on the 21/03/1918. 1919 at Wakefield Arthur's effects valued at £665. 7s. 9d. were left to Clara. Arthur had a brother Harry who gave his life 10/04/1917 with the 2/7th West Yorkshire Regiment CWGC.

CRAWFORD Horace (Henry) Private 10768 6th Bn Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry KIA Delville Wood 18/08/1916 Aged 36 Leeds Modern:Unknown. Born 23/09/1879 Roundhay. Son of John and Emily. Husband of Ann Elizabeth Freeman Married 1904 Leeds Registered Building. Elder brother John Robert served in the 2nd Bn West Yorkshire Regiment throughout the 1890's. Inglewood Roundhay. Shown as Horace on the a photograph below the details I have research from published in Leeds Boys Roll of Honour 1919 correspond with Henry Crawford. Henry became an engine fitter after leaving Leeds Boys until he joined up in August 1914 at London. Both the CWGC site and Those Who Died records show Henry joining up under the name Henry and that he was residing in Bilbao Spain at the time he joined up in 1914. Henry was posted to France in April 1915, coming home on one weeks leave in May 1916.

CROOK George Alexander Apprentice SS Manx Isles Mercantile Marine DIED 30/03/1918 Aged 16. Leeds Modern:1914-1917. Born Sussex 1902. Son of Cuthbert King and Emily Mary Jenkins Married January 1902 Eastbourne. 1911 no 5 Powis Road Brighton Occupation of Georges father was traveller. George joined the Leeds Boys Modern scout troop in 1914 and was chosen as a patrol leader, he excelled in signalling and a school report if the time states " George was smart steady and always reliable and the influence on his class mates was excellent." This skill in signalling led to an appointment on a patrol ship in the North Sea, the SS Manx Isles a steamship used to carry Molasses and built in 1905 finally scrapped in Holland after the war. unfortunately George contracted pneumonia and passed away in March 1918 at Cromarty Hospital Scotland. On Wednesday 03/04/1918 Georges family placed a Death notice in the Yorkshire Evening Post detailing hoe George had died. the family were living at 94 Harehills Avenue Leeds.

DAWSON Sydney Lieutenant 8th Bn York and Lancaster Regiment KIA 01/07/1916 Aged 22 Leeds Modern: Born son of John William who was employed as a brush manufacturer and Annie Maria Smith Died 1916 Married 1883 Leeds Registered Building CWGC 189 Hyde Park Road. Sydney left school to become an articled pupil with a chartered accountants, he won the Fletcher Memorial prize in 1913 for being first place in the Intermediate Examination of the institute of Chartered Accountants. In August 1914 Sydney joined the Leeds University Officer Training Corps and in October of that year he was granted a commission in the Yorkshire and Lancaster Regiment. In the June of 1915 he was promoted to Lieutenant, and in the January of 1916 he became the battalions Adjutant writing the Battalions diary. Sydney lost his life leading other brave Yorkshire Boys over the top at La Boisselle Near Albert Somme, it was reported at the time that is last words were, "We will carry on a bit longer". John Dawson the great nephew of Sydney's, has provided the following information. "A sad aspect of Sydney's death was his mother passed away from shock a few days after the news reached home, and the family never really talked about him - well not to my dad".

DENBY Issac Cecil Second Lieutenant 6th Bn Attached 1st/4th Bn West Riding Regiment KIA 27/06/1917 Aged 22 Leeds Modern: 1908-1910. Son of Herbert a Tailors Cutter by trade and Emily Busfield Married 1890 Bradford and had another son Harold Born 1892 Cottingley. Isaac was brought up in Chapel Allerton Leeds and at school it was said Issac excelled in art and was a keen sportsman being the Captain of St Mathews Cricket Club. On leaving Leeds Modern he joined James Rhodes and Company of Temple Works Leeds. In November 1915 Isaac went to Leeds University joining the Officer Training Corps, and in March 1916 was transferred to Oxford joining No 4 O.T.C Cadet Battalion. 17/06/1916 he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in the 1/6th Duke of Wellingtons West Riding Regiment, and was sent to France on the 22/09/1916, being transferred to the 1/4 th Bn of his regiment. Isaac was given leave in January 1917 and returned to his division (49th) near Lens France. On the Wednesday morning of 27/06/1917 Isaac lost his life along with 6 others when a German Trench Mortar Shell landed in his dugout. Isaac's Superior Officer wrote: "We lose an ideal officer loved by his men and a real friend of all our officers."

Grave B5 London Gazette 26/03/1917 Acting Captain John Graham Mowat For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid on the enemy's trenches. He led his men with great gallantry, and inflicted many casualties on the enemy. On one occasion he personally helped to clear a gap in the enemy's wire.

DENISON John William Lieutenant 6th Bn West Riding Regiment KIA 18/09/1918 Aged 32 Leeds Modern:1898-1902.Military Cross. Born Highfield Yeadon. Son of John William proprietor of Crompton Mills Yeadon and Elizabeth Wilkinson Married 1875 Wharfe District Registered Building CWGC Eaglehurst St. John's Road Morecambe. John left Leeds Boys Modern and took up a management position in the family firm. Enlisted Leeds September 1914. Badly wounded on the night of the 28/03/1917 when he was involved in a night raid near Neuve Chappelle blowing up enemy entanglements, as a result of his actions John received the Military Cross. 1919 Effects of £238. 8s. Left to John's Brother Joseph Francis Bertram Denison.

DIXON Kenneth 2nd Lieutenant 6th Bn West Riding Regiment DOW 20/11/1916 Aged 20 Leeds Modern:1911-1914. Born Leeds. Son of George Edward and Emily Fawcett Married 1898 Emmanuel Headingley Leeds CWGC of 3 St. Mark's Avenue Leeds Road Harrogate. With his twin brother Eric, Kenneth joined the Leeds Medical school in July 1914, and both brothers joined the Leeds University Officer Training Corps, and in 1915 both brothers gained commissions.

DOBSON Reginald Graham Major 6th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment Attached 75th Company Machine Gun Corps DIED 04/01/1919 Aged 24.Leeds Modern:?-1913. Born Garforth. Son of James William Dobson a Colliery Manager and Mary Graham Married 1883 Wakefield The Elms Garforth. Reginald went to Leeds University in 1913 and joined the Officer Training Corps. At the outbreak of war Reginald became a Machine Gun Officer and joined the 6th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment in Leeds. He was then transferred to the 146th Brigade Machine Gun Corps. He went to France in April 1915 being promoted to Lieutenant in the May. Reginald was wounded twice firstly near Ypres Belgium in January 1916 and then again on the morning of 01/07/1916 at the Somme battlefield. Reginald was promoted to Captain and was sent to Egypt in April of 1917 to command the 229th Machine Gun Corps. He was involved in the fighting for Jerusalem and was mentioned in General Allenby's Dispatches. Reginald was then promoted to Major and at Christmas 1917 he was in Cairo on leave when he contracted Pneumonia. Reginald lies in peace at Kantara an important point in the defence of Suez against Turkish attacks which marked the starting point of the new railway east towards Sinai and Palestine, Reginald would more than likely have been buried in another cemetery and moved here after the war. 1919 Reginald's Effects left to His father totalling £225. 1s. 1d.

DRURY Charles Wilfred Corporal 16668 8th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers KIA 26/11/1916 Aged 29 Leeds Modern:? Born Robin Hood near Rothwell Leeds. Son of Charles a Quarryman and Mary Ann Marchant Married at Leeds in 1877. Charles had an older brother James William who survived the war and three sisters Mabel, Rose and lily. Charles had achieved a West Riding Scholarship which entitled him to join Leeds Boys Modern. After leaving school Charles attended St John College York, training to be a teacher. After two years he became the assistant head master at Park Gate Central School Rotherham South Yorkshire. It was said "he was a most Popular teacher and his football team won many trophies". Enlisted Leeds January 1915 into the Northumberland Fusiliers, and was sent to Imbros Crete shortly after the evacuation of Suvla Bay near Gallipoli Turkey. Charles was then sent to Egypt serving East of the Suez Canal. Charles was promoted to Corporal and proceeded to France, after fighting in the trenches he was detached to Divisional Headquarters for a short time and was transferred back to his battalion. On the evening of the 27/11/ 1916 Charles was posting lookouts and on returning to his dug out a German Mortar Shell landed and Charles lost his life. His Company Officer Wrote: " He was a good man and a good soldier, beloved alike by officers and men" 1917 Charles Effects left to his Mother totalling £116. 11s. 6d.

ELSWORTH Harold Lieutenant 4thBn Royal Scots Fusiliers KIA Courcelles Station 21/08/1918 Aged 26 Leeds Modern: ? Born Leeds. Son of Henry Manufacturer of Stationary and Mary Louisa Walker Married 1891 Christchurch Leeds CWGC Iris Villa Scholes. Harold left Leeds Boys Modern to join his fathers and uncles printers firm, and then went onto Oxford University and onto Lincoln College where he took his B.A degree. In August 1914 he tried to enlist but was turned down on medical grounds. Enlisted Leeds January 1915 2nd Lieutenant in the Border Regiment Residence The Avenue Scholes. September 1915 promoted to Lieutenant, December 1916 was transferred to the 2/4th Royal Scottish Fusiliers. April 1917 Harold was posted to the 1st Battalion and attached to the 8th Trench Mortar Battery. 1919 Efects left to his father valued at £295. 12s. 11d. Remembered Scholes War Memorial.

ELLIS George Walker Lance Corporal G/15133 25th Bn Royal Fusiliers 28/07/1917 DIED Blackwater Fever Aged 30 Leeds Modern:1902-1904. Born Chapletown Leeds. Son of Henry and Ann Hartley Married St Peter Leeds 1884 CWGC 5 Norfolk Terrace. George left school to become an apprentice in Hunslet and in 1914 enlisted into the army. He joined the Legion of Frontiersmen, and was attached to the 25th Royal Fusiliers. In April 1915 George set sail for British East Africa, where he fought for two years and at which time he was promoted to Lance Corporal. FILLINGHAM Arthur Edwin Private 15/327 15th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment Leeds Pals KIA 01/07/1916 Aged 20. Born Leeds. Son of Arthur Herbert and Kate Ramsden Married 1893 Hunslet CWGC 3 The Crescent Street Lane Roundhay. Arthur had held a choral scholarship at Lincoln Cathedral before joining Leeds Boys Modern at the age of 15, he was a keen sportsman and played for the school cricket team. After leaving school worked for the Legal and General Assurance Company in Leeds City Centre. Enlisted August 1914 at Leeds Town Hall into the Leeds Pals the 15th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment, serving in Egypt then France after training at Colsterdale and Salisbury.

FIRTH Arthur Harrison 18/1076 18th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment Bradford Pals 30/06/1916 Aged 17 LEEDS MODERN:1911-1913. Born Headingley. Son of Joseph and Sarah. CWGC Langdale Burley-in-Wharfedale. Possibly Incorrect when Arthur enlisted he was living in Burley Cum Headingley. Left Leeds Boys Modern in 1913 when his family moved to Bradford as a result he attended Bradford Grammar School. FIRTH Edwin Norris 2nd Lieutenant 1/8th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment 16/03/1918 Aged 21 LEEDS MODERN:Unknown. Born Baildon. Son of George and Ada Stephenson CWGC Upper Nab House Staveley Road Shipley. After leaving school Edwin joined a business in Bradford then entered his fathers company of printers. In September 1914 Edwin joined the Royal army medical Corps, and was promoted to lance Corporal in June 1915. He was recommended for a commission in December 1915 and joined the 1/8th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment Leeds Rifles. Edwin was drafted to France in July 1916, and was wounded on the 03/09/1916, after recovering Edwin returned to France in January 1917. Gassed at Nieuport Belgium 22/07/1917 he was blinded and suffered from mustard gas on his lungs. Returned home and after two operations on his lungs Edwin passed away it was reported that his funeral was attended by a party from his Regimental depot and the Leeds Boys Modern Cadet Corps.

FREEMAN Herbert Private 535399 1/15th Bn London Regiment Own Civil Service Rifles 18/08/1917 Aged 22 LEEDS MODERN:1906-1910. Born Leeds. Son of Charles Herbert and Sarah Annie CWGC 113 Cardigan Road Headingley. Herbert entered the Civil service on leaving School and was working in London. He joined the Civil service Rifles Battalion of the London Regiment in February 1917 and proceeded to France in early 1918.

Enlisted London Residence Bayswater. Landed France 15/09/1914 An Old Contemptible one of the first men to land in France as part of the British Expeditionary Force. 1923 Brother Robert Walker was residing at 13 Ealand Crescent Carlinghow Batley.

Son of Dr. John Robert and Jane Bryce Mclintoch 1901 20 Storie Street Paisley, 1911 Somerset House Morley. James left school and worked for the London and Liverpool Globe Assurance Company in Leeds. Enlisted in London with Brother Thomas Gibson into the London Scottish Regiment in which their eldest brother Henry was already serving. FACE

GLOVER Cecil Stewart Private 47277 12th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 09/04/1917 Aged 19 LEEDS MODERN: 1905-1913. Born 1897 Leeds. Baptised 01/12/1897 St John the Evangelist. Son of William and Janet Duncan Married 1892 St John The Evangelist Leeds CWGC 9 Brudenell Road Hyde Park. Enlisted Leeds December 1916 into the Training Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was transferred to the West Yorkshire Regiment in February 1917. Two sons were tragically lost within 9 days, Cecil's half brother John William Glover Son of Cecil's father William and Emily Kate Crouch Died Leeds 1891 was KIA 30/03/1917 Aged 27 Laid to Rest Douchy-les-Ayette British Cemetery France.

GRANTHAM William Captain 4th Bn West Riding Regiment 30/11/1918 Aged 32 LEEDS MODERN: 1897-1905. Born Driffield East Yorkshire. Son of Francis Thomas and Harriet Jane Chapman Married 1883 Beverley 1911 253 Hyde Park Road Journalist. Husband of Cicely Scott Married 1912 Settle. One Son William F J Born 1913 Leeds. After attending Leeds Boys Modern William went into Journalism working for the Daily News in London. He joined the Duke of Wellingtons in June 1915 and was promoted shortly afterwards to 2nd Lieutenant. William took part in training in England until early 1917 when he was posted to France. William was on leave in England in the summer of 1918, and returned to the front being badly wounded in October 1918, as the British army retreated he was captured and taken prisoner by the Germans. He was sent to a military hospital at Gottingen and passed away from severe haemorrhaging, William was buried there however after the war he was moved to where he now lies in peace. 1919 Williams estate was left to Cicely his Wife of 34 Delph Mount Leeds totalling £853. 13s. 5d.

GREENHALGH Bertrand William Private 13459 5th Bn Canadian Infantry Saskatchewan Regiment KIA 24/05/1915 Aged 30 LEEDS MODERN: 1899-1900. Born Scarcliffe Derby 01/12/1885. Strangely put his place of birth as Preston on Enlistment papers. Son of William and Nancy 1891 Family Resident at 21 Springfield Mount. Husband of Edith K CWGC Keota Iowa, U.S.A. Enlisted Canada. Bertrand's father was the principle at Springwood high School Leeds when that school closed Bertram attended Leeds Boys Modern. After leaving School he went into business and thn emigratyed to Canada working as a Railway Mail Clerk, and married Edith. On the 24/09/1914 Bertrand joined the Canadian Expiditionary Force enlisting in Valcartier Quebec. At his medical he was described as being 5ft 7.5 inches tall a ruddy complexion with a chest size of 37 inches. Bertrand was also described as having Brown Eyes and Dark Hair. Bertrand lost his life on the attack of the village of Festubert records state he was Laid to Rest at Bethune the following comment was documented " This grave is quite close to the firing line at time of this casualty, it is doubtful a cross is in position to mark the grave". GRICE Wilfred Boden Private 352178 18th Bn Manchester Regiment KIA 23/04/1917 Aged 27 LEEDS MODERN:1903-1906. Born 20/04/1890 Leeds. Son of John Brewster and Mary Ellen Boden Married 1886 Derby CWGC Wilton Hotel Manchester Road Denton Manchester. 1901 3 Park Road Roundhay Leeds. 1911 Unicorn Hotel Peel Green Patricroft Barton Upon Irlwell Eccles Bar Assistant left school to work in his fathers business, in August 1914 at the outbreak of war. He tried several times to enlist but was rejected on medical grounds. In February 1916 he was successful Enlisting in Denton into the 9th Bn Mancheste Regiment. In March 1917 Wilfred was sent to France and attached to B Company of the 18th Bn Manchester Regiment. Sadly Wilfred lost his life three days after his birthday. Remembered Arras Memorial France.
