LEEDS WAR MEMORIALS

The aim and purpose of this website is to document those remembered on memorials and cemeteries throughout the city and those not recorded who were Born or Lived in the City of Leeds and gave their lives in the Great War to ensure they are remembered.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission website records personal details of around 9000 Leeds men, around 2,000 others have no personal details other than their surname, rank, service number and regiment and have been forgotten.

I estimate over 11,000 from Leeds paid the ultimate price, many well after the war due to injuries received. Fathers, Sons, Brothers, Cousins, Work Colleagues all enlisted together and lay side by side to this day in the sea or on foreign soil.

Gallipoli, Passchendaele, Ypres, The Somme, India, Egypt, Italy, and many more areas in the world hold a little piece of Leeds.

Due to traffic improvements in 1937 it was moved to Victoria Gardens outside Leeds City Art Gallery.

Below is a Map of the Absent Voters List for Leeds in 1918.

The six areas below were the Leeds Parliamentary Divisions which contained the local voting Wards.

The Memorials and men remembered on this site are from areas within the City of Leeds Boundary between 1914-1922 as per this map.

Many parts of Leeds today were not integrated into the City until 1974 as a result there is a separate section for these areas.

I hope you will please respect my copyright of this website, this is a self funded one man effort it is a huge task documenting all those who gave their lives from our city and has taken a lot of personal finance and years of time and effort.

It takes on average 45-50 minutes to research and document each man, time well spent as it is the first time that thousands of the men from Leeds on this site have been documented or remembered in nearly a 100 years.

If you feel you can be of assistance have any comments information or photographs of memorials or men from the city please contact me, any details added will be acknowledged.
